The original Midleton Distillery started life as a
woolen mill in 1796 and later became a military barracks during the
Napoleonic Wars. In 1825 James Murphy purchased the property from
Viscount Midleton for the then princely sum of £4000 and converted
into his famous distillery. The Murphy family played a key role in
whiskey distilling and their legacy of skill is perpetuated at the new
Midleton Distillery, opened in 1975, where Murphys fine Irish Whiskey is
produced today.
